The Working Musician's Handbook for Professional Success

The Working Musician’s Handbook for Professional Success

When I started my career as a professional musician, there was little to no information available on where to even begin, and those that knew the information, treated it like a “trade secret.”

While music schools and colleges teach musicians all they need to know from a technical standpoint (which is necessary). I found very few taught how to actually function as a working professional. Things like “How much do I charge?” , “Where can I find a gig?” , “What’s a PRO or music publisher do?”

Although there are numerous books on the music business, most are geared towards becoming an artist. For me, that was never my goal. I just wanted to work as a musician at the highest levels of the industry and make a good living doing so. If this sounds like you, then this book may help you on your journey.

Some of the topics covered in the book are:

  • Establishing your value as a musician.

  • How to find work and start networking.

  • Working as an independent contractor.

  • Copyright and PROs

  • Different types of gigs and the protocols associated with them.

  • Gig checklists for a variety of scenarios.

  • Dealing with setbacks and how to overcome them.

  • Managing your finances as a working musician.
